There are several groups with excessive SPAM right now on some servers.
There are many good groups that you might be interested in. Subscribe to a
few to see what fits your interests.

I use XNews News Reader and by default only shows groups with new articles.
I subscribe to 300 or so current news groups. There are plenty of active
conversations on a variety of news, political, professional, and specific
topic groups.

Good luck,

David

Oh well, Google dropped Usenet, so this actually could be answered. A
quick check of eternal-september.org's statistics shows...

alt.fan.rush-limbaugh
But that one is mostly for trolls who just crosspost to different
groups to get a rise out of people.

it.hobby.fai.da-te
huh, not sure what that one is about, but a lot of Italians seem to be
on the server since aioe went down

rec.arts.tv
well, that's the first of the actual big eight groups. Discussing TV is
I guess reasonable.

of course that all might be a bit skewed as these are the statistics of
a free server based in Germany.

Actually, a.f.r-l is mostly about US politics and as such is often
crossposted with other .politics.* groups. Because it's active it's
targeted by trolls who then get crossposted all over the place.

Yeah, that's what I mean. They often have their own collection of
crossposted groups designed to get people into conflict with one another.
