Maybe it will make a comeback? Alt.comp.freeware is mostly trash now.
Maybe some people will come here.

Web based forums are like subscribing to 10 different newspapers
and having to visit 10 different news stands to pickup each one.
Email list-server groups and USENET are like having all of those
newspapers delivered to your door every morning.

In general I am not on Usenet much anymore other then the Ubuntu group.

I actually get good help there when needed.

Probably due to the arseholes who made it impossible to ask a simple
questiom. I fancy many have gone to alt.comp.freeware :(

That's what kill-filters are for.
Many of us regulars agreed we can't killfile them. If a n00b followed
their advice without someone correcting them, it could be bad.

Like for example... What was his name? Kaditcha man? "The only
solution is to format your hard drive?"

And RtS... "To check if a household outlet is working, get a metal
fork..."

So are you suggesting that if a group member (or group as a whole)
here doesn't catch and correct bad advice than the group has failed?
The person receiving the advice has no responsibility to use
discretion and common sense and check/compare multiple sources?

Should I follow your recommendations to E.S. and put on some soy sauce and

So you would demonstrate to newbies how the regulars of this
newsgroup should deal with trolls: Feed them.

Has good advice ever been given in this group?

Yes, but it was a long time ago.
I seem to remember asking for help and getting it when I was using Win'98.

That's unfortunate because you are a knowledgeable person. If another
person needs help that you can provide, you won't see it.

Well I can certainly relate to that. When I was young, I couldn't
imagine being able to endure retirement. Now I can't imagine ever
having to "work" again. Enjoy it.

Happiest day of my life was when my doctor said:

Sorry but you won't be able to go back to work.

I had both knees replaced five years ago, and the doctor, thinking I had
a desk job said I'd be back to work in six weeks.

When I told him I had a lot of tools to carry and often had to climb
ladders and crawl along the ground I had to retire.

I wanted to go 40 years on the job but after 38 was pretty damn glad to
get the heck out of there.

Now, five years later, other and a slight limp I can do the kind of
physical work I used to do when 40.

Despite all the problems in the world, were it not for good medical
technology I'd be an invalid now
